Audience classification: blog tasks
Create a new blogpost called 'Audience classification' and work through the following tasks:
1) Media Factsheet
1) How is audience defined in the Factsheet?
An audience is a general term for the collection of individual consumers of a media product.
2) What does the infographic for Gen Z in the age of Covid-19 suggest about the media Gen Z consumes?
Gen Z increasingly consumed videos, streams and video games after the pandemic whilst the consumption of physical press, radio and books have declines possibly due to the fact that physical media media would be hard to access in the pandemic.
3) How do media companies target and measure their audience in the digital age?
Media companies rely on data from specialist companies to target specific the consumers that use specific platforms, their schedules and algorithms.
4) What did the NRS used to do and what does PAMCO do now?
The national readership survey was used to collect demographic information of newspapers and other print public that classified the audience into broad social grades and the publishers audience measurement company absorbed the NRS that also includes information on physical print and their digital formats to produce more accurate data.
5) How are demographics and psychographics defined in the factsheet?
Demographics are factors that separate audiences such as age, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, income, level of education, while psychographics is a more subtle way of categorising audiences, through personal interests and their perception of media and their relationship to it.
6) Now read the rest of the factsheet - we'll be studying these theories over the next few lessons. Choose one audience theory you think is interesting and explain why.
I find the uses and gratification theory is the most interesting as its beginning to analyse what factors are most important to audiences perception of media.
2) Psychographics presentation and reflection
1) Post the details from your psychographics presentation (details in the blogpost above) to your blog with all details of the couple you created and their media consumption (it needs to be on your blog individually but can be a duplicate of your partner's post).
2) Reflect on what you have learned about psychographics. Which psychographic groups do you feel best fit YOUR lifestyle and personality? Explain how and why you made your decision and provide evidence justifying this.
I believe the psychographic group that suits me most is a reformer, as I value higher education and the tools it may give to people to pursue personal and individualistic goals or global and societal progress in ethical causes, whilst simultaneously denouncing capitalism and its many glaringly harmful effects. I also always attempt to always gain more knowledge in media and search for conflicting perspective to better understand them and grow my own personal perspective on issues that may or may not effect me.
